Position Overview

The Boeing Company has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Acoustic Programs Systems Engineer - Early Career.  This position will support P-8 Acoustics Systems in Herndon, VA.


The P-8 Acoustic Subsystem is part of the overall US Navy P-8 mission of Anti-Submarine warfare (ASW). As an Inter-divisional Work Authorization (IWA) to Boeing Seattle Mission Systems, Boeing Huntington Beach P-8 Acoustic Programs has the design authority for hardware and software of the P-8 Acoustic Subsystem.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Tests and validates to ensure system designs meet operational and functional requirements and supports resolution of product integration issues and production anomalies.
  • Test systems and/or components to ensure that components and systems function according to test plans and are ready for production.
  • Make choices in the use of testing techniques that will be appropriate to ensure production readiness of computing components.
  • Develop and execute test plans and procedures. 
  • Develop test plans such as functional, integration and usability.
  • Develop high-level, detailed test designs consistent with requirements and validate designs through various methods of review/test/analysis.
  • Document information such as configuration, installation and user guides following process standards.
  • Document and present results and proposes corrective actions as needed to stakeholders, peers and suppliers to validate delivery systems and/or components functions.
  • Perform systems integration, configuration, and testing of software and firmware into hardware operating in multiple configurations on multiple platforms.
  • Perform system requirements traceability and verification/validation activities.
  • Perform regression tests, informal and formal subsystem testing and formal customer acceptance tests.
  • Coordinates test requirements, determines test methods and capabilities.
  • Conducts system test preparations by coordinating system integration, fabrication, modification, setup, checkout and teardown.
  • Conducts tests, analyzes data and documents results; participates in test readiness reviews.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves laboratory and test-related problems.
  • Provides support to products throughout their lifecycle by developing root-cause analysis of anomalies (root cause and corrective action – RCCA), as requested.
  • Supports project management by providing work statement, budget, schedule and other required inputs and by reporting project status.
  • Communicates proactively with Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Design, Support Organizations, and management personnel.

This position requires an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)

Typical Education & Experience:

Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 2 or more years' experience or a Master's degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.


Basic (Required) Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in an engineering classification .
  • Experience with engineering fundamentals, processes for the development of performance requirements, objectives, evaluation criteria and analysis.
  • Experience working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to travel (10-15%), as necessary, to support engineering development

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience) 

  • Experience in test automation tools.
  • Experience working in a lab environment (e.g. HW/SW interfaces/integration, creating/conducting configuration testing, troubleshooting, proficiency using general lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, meters and analyzers) is highly desirable.
  • Individual must possess excellent communication skills and is expected to interact frequently with customers and subject matter experts.
  • Experience with radar or electronic warfare or communications (e.g. radios) or avionics (aircraft electronics) is also a plus. 
  • Experience with RF, firmware, FPGAs, antennas, electro-magnetics/electro-magnetic compatibility is desirable but not required.
  • Knowledge of real-time target environments, including processor and network architectures, communication protocols (A429, CAN, Ethernet), simulation frameworks.
  • Knowledge of scripting tools like Perl, Python desired in addition to C, C++.
  • Applicants must have good communication, analytical, and organizational skills and be able to work in a team environment - previous design team or special project team participation is desired.
  • Experience in Acoustics and Anti-Submarine Warfare.
  • Demonstrated innovative problem solving.
  • Experience with Navy programs, P-8A or other Navy/Marine Flight Test Programs.
  • Experience with systems engineering principles.
  • Experience working with systems engineers or systems integrators.
