Job Description

The Boeing Company's Phantom Works organization is seeking an electro-optics engineer (level 3) with a strong optical engineering background, at both the component and system level. The position is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.


  • Develop system requirements, perform trades, concept definition, detailed design and analysis, integration, test and maintenance of optical systems.
  • Work directly with the customer to derive detailed requirements from high level goals and/or desired capabilities.

Typical Education and/or Experience

Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 5 or more years' experience, Master's degree with 3 or more years' experience or PhD degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.


Required Qualifications


  • Experience with a broad range of optical applications including imaging, illumination, radiometry and photometry, physical and geometric optics and polarization.
  • Experience working in a research and development environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Matlab analysis skills
  • Adaptive optics
  • Large telescope experience
  • Experience with optical modeling software packages like Zemax and FRED.
  • Experience applying knowledge of optical and optoelectronic materials (substrates, coatings, composites) to meet performance.
  • Experience with the integration and performance analysis of laser systems.
  • Willing to stretch beyond experience base and to take risks to achieve objectives
  • Self-starter, highly motivated, works well in fast paced multi-discipline team environments 
  • Ability to work with quick decisions for the best interest of the business

This position requires an active Secret U.S. Security Clearance and the ability to obtain a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) Post Start.  (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)
