Job Description

BDUK is a subsidiary of the Boeing Company and currently employs over 1,300 people in the UK. BDUK is responsible for delivering several exciting contracts to our UK defence customers including Through Life Support for a variety of aircraft, Logistic Information Services, Training Programmes and C4ISR services

This post is for a Systems Engineer to work as a Cross Domain Solution (CDS) and technical security lead systems engineer within the engineering function in Boeing Defence UK. He or she will be responsible for ensuring a compliant and accredited CDS solution is delivered as well as the wider technical security of the programme

As part of the engineering function, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a variety of programmes and business development opportunities and contribute to engineering excellence across the company

The successful candidate for this position will be responsible to the Boeing Defence UK Systems Engineering Manager, Chief Programme Engineering or Lead Engineer for technical management and design of systems solutions, providing technical input for all aspects of projects, including design and system integration and providing support in order to facilitate the delivery of projects within time and budget, and maintain customer satisfaction

The role is fundamental in translating customer needs/requirements into appropriate solutions. It requires the successful candidate to work in multidisciplinary teams to both generate proposals and develop solutions

Responsibilities include working collaboratively as part of an integrated Boeing and supplier team to jointly deliver cost effective fieldable solutions. The role will include working autonomously and as part of various teams and may involve the specification and procurement of materials for projects in order to meet project delivery timescales. The successful candidate will also review technical aspects of Invitations to Tender and specifications and assess customer technical requirements, apply engineering best practices and processes and support continuous improvement

Key Roles include:  

  • Responsible for the design and definition of the CDS and security enforcing features of the overall solution, including Protective Monitoring service
  • Leads the requirements capture and detailed design of the security enforcing subsystems and components in accordance with the customer requirements
  • Specifies the solution to meet the allocated requirements
  • Liaises with suppliers via supply-chain management to identify the best-fit components for the solution using trade-studies where applicable
  • Leads any in-house software development and integration required for the CDS and Security technical solution elements during incremental delivery spirals
  • Provides technical oversight to suppliers of solution components
  • Provides technical oversight to ensure the solution meets the specification
  • Manages interfaces provided to other elements of the system
  • Documents the subsystem solution design in the Solution Architecture Design document and other key documents encompassing the technical baseline
  • Ensures the allocated subsystem is documented for input to end-user training and technical publications
  • liaises closely with Security SME to ensure the solution meets the applicable security requirements and standards and is accreditable
  • Attends Customer and internal Security Working Groups to progress the security subsystem specification, implementation and acceptance

Qualifications

Experience in ideally all of the following is required:

  • A Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in Systems Engineering or a related engineering field is required with experience in the development of complex systems and Systems of Systems.  In particular, systems engineering experience relating to Cross-domain / secure communications systems, Synthetic Training Systems is desirable
  • Cyber Security Qualification such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) or other relevant IT security qualifications are highly desirable.
  • System Design including: Architectural design, Functional analysis, Interface Management, Maintaining Design Integrity, Modelling and Simulation, Solution Trade-Offs, Integration & Test, Verification, Validation and Transition to Operation
  • The application of the fundamental concepts of systems thinking to systems engineering. These include: understanding what a system is; its context within its environment; its boundaries and interfaces; its lifecycle and an appreciation of the role the system plays in the super system of which it is a part. 
  • Design, definition and accreditation of Cross-domain Security and Security Enforcing features of an overall solution, including interfacing with Protective Monitoring services.
  • Implementation of Security Enforcing features in Microsoft and Linux Operating Systems
  • Good understanding of communications protocols and networking
  • Knowledge of Video Teleconferencing and Telephony protocols
  • Knowledge of simulation application protocols such as HLA(e) or DDS
  • Experience of implementing solutions that meet MOD security standards such as the following (or similar) HMG Information Assurance Standard 1&2, Risk Management Framework, ISO27001/2, RMADS generation, GPG13
  • Requirements capture and detailed design of the security enforcing subsystems and components in accordance with the customer requirements.
  • Liaising with suppliers to identify the best-fit components for the solution using trade-studies where applicable.
  • Managing interfaces provided to other elements of the system
  • liaising closely with Security SME to ensure the solution meets the applicable security requirements and standards and is accreditable.
  • Attending Customer and internal Security Working Groups to progress the security subsystem specification, implementation and acceptance.
  • Experience of tools including the following desirable: IBM DOORS, Sparx EA, Atlassian JIRA, HP Quality Centre
