The Boeing Company is currently seeking an Autonomy Lead Software Engineer (Phantom Works) to join the Advanced Autonomous Systems (AAS) Software team located in St. Louis, MO. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) business organization.
Phantom Works is an advanced research and development organization responsible for engaging customers through cutting-edge visual modeling and simulation; innovating cross-cutting concepts and technologies; prototyping solutions to extend current products and win new programs; and developing new businesses and entering new markets.
As a Lead Software Engineer you will lead a team in a casual but professional environment where there is long-term potential for career growth into management or technical leadership positions. The optimal candidate works well with a team, has great communication skills, and is a self-starter. Partnering with both internal and external organizations, our team provides the technical leadership to develop key enabling technologies, grow our autonomy software portfolio, and execute live demonstrations in support of critical future defense franchises in autonomy, air vehicle operations, surveillance, aerial refueling, collaborative teaming and other vital missions.
Create autonomous software systems to control, augment, and enhance Boeing products
Act in technical software integration lead capacity for Boeing sponsored demonstrations, on programs and in highly-visible large fleet demonstrations using group 2-5 UAV’s and surrogate UAV’s
Be familiar with flight dynamics and leverage experience with hardware as it relates to sensors, embedded systems, and systems integration
Ensure sound software engineering principles are upheld while supporting BDS customers with high-quality and timely program execution software deliverables
Development of long term plans for implementing tools and technologies that enable a robust, modern and flexible software architecture
Work closely with partner organizations, such as research labs or subsidiaries, and other Phantom Works engineering leaders to ensure Boeing is oriented to become the leader in Aerospace Defense Autonomy
Utilize strong soft skills related to consensus-building, communication, conflict resolution, and active listening
Ensure alignment/feasibility between strategic, technical and demonstration roadmaps
Define, document and relentlessly improve processes related to software workflow, prioritizing simplicity and adaptability
This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite in St. Louis, MO.
Security Clearance and Export Control Requirements:
This position requires an active Secret U.S Security Clearance (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)
Required Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):
Secret Clearance or above pre-start
14+ years of software engineering experience
5+ years of experience with robotics and / or autonomy techniques
5+ years of team leadership experience
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance
14+ years of combined experience with languages including C++, Python, Java and Ruby
Domain knowledge of aerospace mission systems software development
Real time software development experience
Experience with version control systems such as Git
Experience as a software architect
Experience supporting flight demonstrations
Experience with continuous integration practices
Experience with Agile software development process
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
