Job Description

The Boeing Company has an exciting opportunity for a Systems Engineer to join the Autonomous Systems Advanced Technology Programs. We are seeking a creative and highly-motivated Systems Engineer who is interested in Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) development, build and operations. This position will be located in Herndon, VA.


As a member of the Systems Engineering Integration and Test (SEIT) Team, this position will perform a wide variety of Systems Engineering functions to ensure our UUV products meet performance requirements and are delivered to meet market and/or customer needs.   This may include Systems Requirements development, management, and verification, System Performance modeling, analysis, and reporting, System Test planning, execution, and reporting as well as other Systems Engineering functions as required to support system development and fielding. 


Additional roles and responsibilities of the position may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Evaluation of operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces. 
  • Support analyses and studies for affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, system security, regulatory, certification, product assurance and other specialties to ensure mission success. 
  • Development of planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of requirements management processes, tools, risk, issues, opportunity management and technology readiness assessment processes.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to resolve cross-functional technical issues are also required.

The successful candidate will need to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment, and must be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as part of an Integrated Product Team (IPT).

This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.


Typical Education & Experience: Bachelor's and 2 or more years' experience or a Master's degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Formal Systems Engineering Training or experience with Boeing Systems Engineering Process or Equivalent
  • Experience working with multiple disciplines to resolve issues or reach a collaborative position
  • Evaluate customer operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical data and assure compatibility of program interfaces


Desired Experience and/or Skills:

  • Experience or familiarity with Autonomous and/or remote vehicle CONOPS development
  • Experience with ViTech CORE tool to support CONOPs simulation and analysis to verify technical threshold compliance (e.g. endurance, power, range, etc.)
  • Experience or familiarity with in the design, development, test, manufacturing or operation of maritime systems.  Underwater systems preferred
  • Experience in the design, development, test, manufacturing or operation of autonomous systems
  • Requirements analysis experience to include familiarity with Boeing’s Requirement Definition Standard and the DOORS tool.
  • PM and KPP Monitoring experience to support monitoring the design convergence toward defined thresholds
  • Risk Management experience to include familiarity with Boeing Opportunity, Risk and Issue System (BORIS) and ability to develop a Risk Management Plan
