Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Mechanical Systems team is looking for a Senior Mechanical System and Design Analysis Engineer to join our team in Long Beach, CA. This Individual will work within the Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), Environmental Control Systems organization to develop, produce, deliver and support customers who fly Boeing airplanes.  Enable high aircraft performance while operating in compliance with regulatory (FAA, EASA, Military etc.) requirements.

The Environmental Control Systems (ECS) Engineering is an organization of highly skilled individuals responsible for defining and integrating airplane systems for airplane cabin pressurization, air conditioning, ice and rain protection, fire protection, and avionics cooling. Our mission is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for passengers, flight crew, electronics, and cargo via the most reliable and cost-effective solutions.

Position Overview:

We are a team that supports all Boeing models both in development and in airline service. These models include various commercial and military airplanes programs. This role would be focused on pneumatic system development, including the design, integration, and test.

ECS Pneumatic Systems team is responsible for architecting and analyzing all new high-pressure air supply control system (ASCS) and nacelle ant-ice system (NAIS) and responsible for the integration of ASCS & NAIS to engines and to rest of the airplane (downstream bleed consumers) configurations.

This position will support the development and documentation of mechanical and fluid system and thermal environment requirements to establish the system design. Supports the development, maintenance, or modification of system, component, and installation designs/proposals to provide design documentation to downstream groups. Performs and documents analyses to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications. Contributes to supplier development, test, and production activities and directs the supplier to optimize integration and achieve program goals. Supports system components' designs/proposals standards to provide installation and detailed documentation. The ideal candidate will support both ASCS & NAIS sub-teams within Environmental Controls Systems (ECS).

Join our team of highly trained Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) who specialize in modeling sub-freezing water droplet impingement on protected surfaces. In this role, you will evaluate runback ice characteristics and correlate findings with wind tunnel and flight test data, contributing to critical certification activities. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop your expertise and grow into an SME, while also gaining valuable insights into the analysis that supports the overall airplane development and certification processes.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Ice & Rain Protection (ATA Chapter 30) Bleed Air Supply (ATA Chapter 36) Air Conditioning (ATA Chapter 21) Low-Pressure Analysis.

  • Leads and provides technical quality review of the development and documentation of mechanical and fluid systems and thermal environment to establish the system design.

  • Leads activities to validate and verify mechanical and fluid systems requirements.

  • Leads the development, maintenance or modification of system components' designs/proposals to provide installation and detail documentation.

  • Performs and documents analyses.

  • Manages supplier development, test and production activities and directs the supplier to optimize integration and achieve program goals.

  • Prioritizes, delegates and tracks performance and documentation of analyses of mechanisms/landing gear/ordnance components and systems selecting appropriate methods to validate or assess the design.

  • Supports proposal preparation and new business development efforts.

  • Trains and coaches’ others.

  • Works under minimal direction.

In addition to the Primary Responsibilities, the following tasks may be required to support the overall goals of the team and contribute to the success of the organization:

  • Drives the development and documentation of mechanical and fluid system and thermal environment requirements to establish the Nacelle Anti-Ice system design.

  • Supports the development, maintenance, or modification of system, component, and installation designs/proposals to provide design documentation to downstream groups.

  • Performs and documents analyses to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications.

  • Contributes to supplier development, test, and production activities and directs the supplier to optimize integration and achieve program goals.

  • Supports system components' designs/proposals standards to provide installation and detailed documentation.

  • This position will support Product Development and Future Study

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

  • Bachelors degree or higher in an engineering discipline.

  • 8+ years of experience with Ice Protection System Performance Analysis THERMIPS.

  • 8+ years of experience in pneumatic system develop and test.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Enable high aircraft performance while operating in compliance with regulatory (Military EN-EZ Airworthiness, , FAA, EASA, etc) requirements.

  • Utilizing the Boeing Problem Solving Method (BPSM) to investigate the root cause of problems faced both during development and in-service by our customers who use our products.

  • Collaborating with other organizations such as Aerodynamics Performance and Stability & Control, Structures, Flight Deck Crew Operations, Pilots, Electrical Systems, Systems Stress, Customer Services & Airline Customers, Factory and Flight Line Operations, Supply Chain, Airplane Safety, and many others.

  • Technical Knowledge in system controls, mechanical systems, systems modeling, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics with advance knowledge of compressible flow theory.

  • Experience with JIRA, Azure DevOps, DESE/Cameo, Matlab/Simulink, Scripting code (Matlab, C++, Fortran), Thermal CFD Tool (Thermip, ANSYS Fluent, Star CCM+, OpenFOAM or other), SINDA/FLUINT, LEWICE3D, FENDSAP-ICE.

  • Meteorological knowledge or a private pilot’s license would be a plus.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skill across multi-disciplines to solve complex problems and convey complex, nuanced results in a clear, concise manner that is easily understood by a wide audience.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

  • $124,100 - $167,900
