Boeing Defense, Space and Security, Space and Launch division has an opening for a Senior Laser Communications Engineer/Physicist in El Segundo, CA., whose expertise will fall under photonics and laser communications in support of multiple programs .
The Photonics/Optical/Infrared Sub-system/Systems Engineer/Physicist will be responsible for development, analysis, and optimization of electro-optical payloads, systems and subsystems on space platforms. This engineer will posses a background in photonics or laser communications with a good understanding of general physics, optics or electromagnetics. This position requires sound technical judgment, and the ability to rapidly make and contribute to decisions that balance the overall architecture design. As well as strong collaboration skills with customers and program team members to effectively create design concepts through measuring performance to requirements. This position requires strong organizational skills and adaptability to work in a fast-paced and continually changing environment. The successful candidate must be able to clearly communicate photonic solutions to problems.
Responsible for the development of system and subsystem photonic architectures from existing and developmental designs and to analyze or test system and subsystem performance
Develops measures of effectiveness/performance for payload and subsystem design elements
Incorporates measured data from materials and subsystems in the laboratory into modeling system performance
Supports trades and collaboration with engineering team
Develops and design photonic solutions to various payload and communication problems
Manages appropriate aspects of critical supplier and potentially partner performance to ensure compliance to requirements.
Responsible for oversight of vendors
Develops and validates requirements for various photonic Payload systems and components and optical communications systems and components.
Develops architectures to integrate complex systems and components into higher level systems and platforms.
Performs complicated trade studies, modeling, simulation or other forms of analysis to predict component, interconnects, sub-system and system performance.
Optimizes designs and conducts tests to validate performance.
Provides support to products throughout their lifecycle from manufacturing to customer use by providing guidance and support to resolve complex issues.
Supports project management by providing development of work statements, budgets, schedules and other required inputs and conducting appropriate reviews.
Generates major sections of proposals to support development of new business.
Works under minimal direction.
This position requires the ability to obtain U.S. Security Clearance post start, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):
Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other technical degree
Experience working in photonics, photonic design, and the physics of photonic components
Experience working in free-space optical propagation, laser communication systems or subsystems
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Understanding of optical transceivers and associated waveforms
Experience working with space systems
Project leadership experience
Modeling and simulation capability experience
Experience developing innovative solutions
Advance experience in free-space optical propagation, laser communication systems or subsystems
Typical Education & Experience:
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. Basic relocation is available for internal candidates.
