The Information Services team helps employees across Boeing create, access, understand, discover, manage, and disseminate information. They optimize the latest developments in information management strategies to support Boeing innovation and competitiveness, delivering high quality, cost effective solutions on a global scale.

The Organize & Manage team works with customers across Boeing to make sure that the right information gets to the right people in the most efficient way.


As experts in information management and licensing of technical and business information, they ensure the proper authentication, archival, management, curation, and retrieval of data through its lifecycle. Team members are also asked to consider data re-use potential, the authority of the sources the data comes from, and the restrictions on data governed by the terms of its use.


To help Boeing users organize and retrieve this data, they develop, establish, and adapt controlled vocabularies, and deliver the electronic and paper form services that keep Boeing business operations flowing.

A cataloger at Boeing does original and descriptive cataloging, assigns classification numbers, and indexes using a specialized controlled vocabulary to conform to Boeing Information Services’ established standards. The cataloger also enriches the existing controlled vocabulary, performs original and descriptive cataloging of internal documents and other materials, works on cataloging improvement projects (including some maintenance), and trains other Boeing employees who use the integrated library system for their document management system. The cataloger works with members of the Store and Distribute Team re: Technology Integration (working with system DBAs who help administer the ILS).




• Acquires, processes, stores, retrieves, disseminates information and digital assets, and dispositions per policy by performing various information related assignments


• Performs subject analysis of content, application of controlled vocabulary to aid in search and discovery to support the digital asset needs of the business; develops these controlled vocabularies used for the subject analysis; and updates the corporate name authority list


• Provides detailed instructions to end users in accessing and using information from internal and external sources


• Participates with business partners and end users in business planning for information and dataset needs


• Shares knowledge and contributes to the development of digital asset products and services


• Collaborates with the other Information Management lifecycle job functions

Typical Education / Experience:
Bachelor's and typically 6 or more years' related work experience, a Master's degree and typically 4 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Basic Requirements:

• This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.


• 3 -5 years of experiences in or demonstrated knowledge of cataloging, authority control, classification schemes, and indexing using a specialized controlled vocabulary.


• Knowledge of original and descriptive cataloging practices and standards and ability to apply these to internal documents and other materials.


• Familiarity with electronic resource management systems and workflows.


Desired skills:

• Ability to work independently as well as be part of a team. Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with internal staff, employees from other business units, and other colleagues.


• Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work both individually and collaboratively within a diverse and changing environment.


• Ability to develop load profiles for MARC records from different vendors to assist database administrators with their part of the data load.


• Working knowledge of training techniques to make cataloging understandable for those who do not/may not have a cataloging background. Develop and deliver training programs to staff, document release, and other groups.


• Knowledge of the ILS in order to prepare statistical and narrative reports on cataloging and related activities.


• Experience with database maintenance for bibliographic and authority records.


• Ability to maintain the integrity of the integrated library system through authority file control.


• Interest in professional growth and development to enhance skills and knowledge of current trends in cataloging and metadata.


• Cultivate an environment of continual learning in the cataloging unit; create effective cataloging documentation and training materials.


• Well-developed problem-solving, organizational, and communications skills, ability to effectively plan, organize, and prioritize tasks according to schedules and goals, and an aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail.


• Professional experience or demonstrated knowledge in aerospace, engineering, or another field of science & technology.


• Experience working with OCLC Connexion, Library of Congress classification schedules, Dewey Decimal Classification schedules, MARC21, AACR2R2, RDA, Cutter tables, and integrated library systems (for example, Innovative Interfaces Millennium).


• Knowledge of project management principles.
