This is a unique opportunity to work in two factory locations on two Boeing Development Programs, including Space Launch System (SLS). The initial assignment for selected candidates will be production of the SLS Core Stage and is based at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, while going through the process for a security clearance required to work in San Antonio, TX. If selected, candidates will be required to relocate to San Antonio, Texas as a condition of employment.

Overview: Space Launch System (SLS)


Boeing and NASA are building the world’s largest rocket for human exploration of deep space. The Space Launch System (SLS) provides a critical heavy-lift capability, powering people and cargo beyond our moon and into deep space to enable diverse exploration, science and security missions. Boeing is the prime contractor for the design, development, test and production of the massive core stage, and development of the avionics.

 

Applies professional technical expertise and guidance to solve complex problems by interpreting technical data such as blueprints or manufactures' manuals. Work typically requires a thoroughly comprehensive knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting/repair procedures and replacement of components, a thorough knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modification and repair and the ability to determine functionality of non-complex electrical systems. A detailed knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, cable tensiometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers, etc. is required.  The mechanic will be required to access aircraft data via computer systems and initiate on-line parts and discrepancy requests.

 

Specializes in electrical work, modification, troubleshooting and repair. Performs aircraft bench and/or flight line testing, troubleshooting, adjustment, repair and installation of any complex or non-complex aircraft electrical system in the testing, development and modification of aircraft and related systems in accordance with DOD, manufacturer, company, supplier and other directives.

 

Adhering to government and company procedural guidance, performs assembly, installation, visual inspection of physical characteristics, modification of wire bundles and electrical assemblies, operational and quality checks of aircraft work. Troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft electrical and comm/nav-systems of moderate difficulty at the organizational or depot maintenance level. Repairs, replaces and rebuilds electrical system wiring, connectors and components using hand tools, power tools, and applicable test equipment. Reads and interprets manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing and replacing damaged wiring, malfunctioning or damaged components. Installs and or modifies new or existing systems.

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform advanced, specialized or prototype production operations of major space structures.
  • Utilizing predetermined setups and operating methods, adjust and simultaneously operate a variety of numerically controlled and/or conventional equipment capable of performing various functions such as, but not limited to, forming, bonding, welding, machining, drilling, cutting, robotic and otherwise automated and/or manual assembly.
  • Perform all tasks involved in the preparation, set up and operation of thermal processing tools and equipment.
    Interpret standard work instructions, charts, tables, blueprints, formulas, sketches, verbal and electronic orders, job layouts, etc. to accomplish assigned work.
  • Ensure that all equipment is used in accordance with established safety and operating procedures.
  • Conduct routine preventative work to maintain and ensure cleanliness of equipment.
  • Diagnose and correct malfunctions occurring in machining and/or assembly process.
  • Perform necessary drilling, riveting, assembly or subassembly, including bonding and sealing as required.
  • Use any and all precision measuring instruments, gauges, tools, etc., necessary to check machine readiness and to check completed parts for finish, dimensions and conformance to quality requirements.
  • Perform all tasks involved in the coordination, preparation, and movement of material and tools.
  • Operate a forklift, mobile crane, and riding type electric powered elevating equipment to accomplish work assignment.
  • Maintain necessary certifications, licenses and permits as required for assigned work.
  • Work with Engineering, Planning, research engineers, etc. to originate and develop new procedures, techniques and production aids to facilitate equipment operations and to support design and implementation of new products.

Occupation or Operation Requirement:


Perform complex work where specific or general operation methods are available. Judgment to make complex decisions. Responsible for the proper performance of assignments and the prudent handling of product, tools and equipment. Will be required to consult with Management and peers to assess best work process. Will train and assist less senior employees. Will perform all duties of lower Electrical classifications as required to successfully accomplish assignments. The incumbent will frequently be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records. Must be able to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects.

 

The employee must be able to ascend and descend vertical work ladders, work in confined spaces, and lift loads of approximately 35 pounds.

 

Must be able to work various shifts and/or an alternate baseline schedule that may frequently change to support mission requirements and may include weekends and holidays. Mission requirements and/or workload may require both scheduled and unscheduled overtime.

Qualifications
This position requires the ability to obtain US Security Clearance, for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.
 
This position will require the ability to obtain a security clearance with a favorable Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) or T5 Investigation and customer approval as a condition of employment.
 
This position requires the ability to obtain badging for NASA facility access. This is a sensitive/safety-sensitive position and is subject to NASA (DOT) random drug and alcohol testing. The employee must meet medical requirement for work in geographic areas.  

 

  • If applicable, please clearly indicate on resume highest level of US Security Clearance obtained along with date received.
  • Please clearly indicate on resume your aircraft platform experience.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED):

 

  • Position requires more than 7 years of experience in those duties as previously described for satisfactory performance.
  • Knowledgeable in shop mathematics and practices, electrical/electronic theories and avionics systems sufficient to perform assigned duties.
  • Experience in working with schematics, specifications, assembly drawings and standard operating procedures.
  • Proficient in computer skills including but not limited to: aircraft related systems and basic office software.

PREFERRED:

 
  • Current US security clearance at the secret level or higher; Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) is ideal.
  • Experience with Very Important Person (VIP) aircraft or specialty aircraft interiors installations within the last ten (10) years.
  • FAA certification in Airframe and/or Power plant AND minimum on ten(10) years experience is preferred.
