Boeing seeks a Senior Optical Engineer to join our team that works out of both Albuquerque and Kirtland AFB, New Mexico to support advanced concepts development with optical design, analysis, integration, and test.  

This position will support modeling and simulation of optical systems, and analysis of test data to anchor models and develop improvements to existing optical systems.  You must have a broad skill set in multiple areas such as:

You will interface with extremely talented, high performing, multi-disciplined engineering teams on start-of-the-art adaptive optics and optical imaging systems.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and validate electromagnetic requirements for electrical systems, electronic systems, mechanical systems, interconnects, and structures.  Develops architectures for system integration and component or hardware integration into higher level systems and platforms. 
  • Coordinate with customer to establish key requirements and project objectives.
  • Perform trade studies, modeling, simulation, and other forms of analysis to predict component, interconnects, and system performance and to optimize design around established requirements.
  • Define and conduct critical tests of various kinds to validate performance of designs to requirements.
  • Work with suppliers and partners to ensure compliance to requirements. 
  • Validate and test system design.  Occasional night work is required.

To meet security standards and protocols, all work is performed onsite at both our Albuquerque LEOS and Kirtland AFB sites. 

This position requires an active Top Secret U.S. Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.  (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 5+ years of experience with optical design.
  • 3+ years of experience with optical systemarchitecture and requirements development, test, and verification.
  • 3+ years of managing electro-optical development programs.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master’s degree or higher in a related field of engineering.
  • Experience working with adaptive optics systems.
  • Experience designing and integrating optical systems.
  • Optical System Integration:  knowledge of multi-discipline integration issues applicable to infrared/electro-optical (IR/EO), visible, ultraviolet (UV), photonics, fiber, high energy laser, and optics, including reliability, availability, maintainability, testability, supportability, mechanical design, packaging, low observables, electrical, software, configuration management, environmental constraints, safety, human factors.

Typical Education & Experience: 

Lead (level 4): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Lead (level 5): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Principal (level 6): Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years' related work experience, Master+18 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range:

Lead (level 4): 118,150 – 159,850

Lead (level 5): 145,350 – 196,650

Principal (level 6): 177,650 – 240,350
