The Structural Thermoplastic Composites team within Boeing Technology Innovation (BTI) is seeking a Composite Materials, Process, & Physics Engineer (MP&P) to join our team in Berkeley, MO.

Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including: Associate and Mid-Level Engineer.

This team is part of the Composites, Materials, and Structures organization within BTI, and is responsible for researching, developing, and scaling new thermoplastic composite material systems and their associated fabrication methods. This position will support the Structural Thermoplastic Composite Development laboratory and work closely with external suppliers and internal customers to support the implementation of thermoplastic composites on commercial and defense platforms.

In this role, the experienced engineer will perform material characterization and selection, process development, and troubleshooting of polymer matrix and fiber-reinforced composite systems for aerospace applications. They will conduct manufacturing risk reduction efforts to demonstrate the feasibility of thermoplastic composites in new commercial and defense applications. This role offers hands-on exposure to lab-scale processing, and cross-functional work with the structures, production, and testing communities. Prior structural analysis or design experience is highly preferred.

Position Responsibilities

  • Support the research and development of next-generation thermoplastic composite materials and processes
  • Participate in the evaluation and qualification of materials, processes, equipment, and suppliers to ensure conformance with enterprise and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate with production and development programs to identify new applications for thermoplastic composites
  • Collaborate with Structures and Design communities to perform and interpret structural analysis of thermoplastic parts to optimize part definitions for weight and cost
  • Represent the organization as the technical contact on contracts and projects through routine contact with suppliers, customers, and sub-contractors
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplined team alongside other engineers and technicians
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and revising technical documents such as reports and specifications
  • Follow safety, quality and environmental procedures in the lab and manufacturing areas

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement
  • 1+ years’ related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

  • Advanced engineering degree
  • Experience working with composite materials in a laboratory or development environment
  • Strong problem solving and experimental skills; ability to apply knowledge of materials engineering and scientific principles to develop, design, analyze, test, and validate solutions for complex systems, sub-systems and designs
  • Familiarity with standard materials testing methods and principles of structural analysis
  • Comfortable working in support of multiple programs, internal and external customers, and deadlines
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Knowledge of responsibilities and tasks performed by various engineering departments/disciplines; knowledge of the interaction between departments/disciplines and how their products/processes affect one another and impact non-engineering processes
  • Experience managing budget and schedule for multi-year development projects
  • Interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills, and ability to perform effectively in a team environment

Summary Pay Range Associate: $91,800 - $124,200

Summary Pay Range Mid-Level: $112,200 - $151,800
