Boeing Research and Technology, Boeing’s Global Research and Development team, is looking to hire a motivated, self-starting Lead Deputy Chief Engineer into our team in El Segundo, CA.

As Deputy Chief Engineer you will demonstrated knowledge and experience across a wide range of disciplines necessary to develop a test facility such as systems engineering, systems analysis, mechanical/fluid design, rotating machinery, control systems, and test. This position will contribute to the design, development, test and operations of a process plant/facility with rotating machinery, heat exchangers, instrumentation and control systems. As lead engineer, you will develop processes related analysis and design methodology and act as a technical advisor to help solve complex problems. The Deputy Chief Engineer is an integral part of the project leadership team.

In pursuit of Boeing's research and business interests, the successful candidate will:

  • Work on leading edge technologies across the enterprise and at business partners and teammate facilities to develop, document, analyze, and test operational, functional, and environmental requirements of developed research systems

  • Provide high impact, creative solutions to complex technical problems

  • Work both independently and as part of a team environment

  • Provide critical support and independent review of the work of teammates

Candidate shall be able to show recent demonstrated ability in one or more of the following areas:

  • Leading technical integration across a wide range of disciplines including system engineering, mechanical/fluid design, thermal/fluid analysis, and suppliers

  • Process plant/facility design and operations with rotating machinery, heat exchangers, instrumentation and control systems

  • System assembly, integration & test culminating in requirements validation & verification

  • Small team environment where individuals are entrepreneurial self-starters who produce engineering products involving multiple disciplines

  • Learn a new technical area or application and show individual evidence of contributing to success of a project in that area as an individual contributor

  • Engineering laboratory operations

  • Research & Development involving highly technical, complex engineering content

Position Responsibilities:

  • The successful applicant will oversee a team of engineers, suppliers, and facility personnel in the technical design, development, integration, and test of a large scale complex mechanical and fluid system test facility

  • Serves as the Deputy Chief Engineer for the program accountable for technical integrity and safety

  • Provide leadership to drive design integration, resolve technical issues, resolve supplier technical issues, and resolve requirements issues

  • Ensures technical baseline control and supports supplier technical oversight and direction.

  • Identifies technical risks and ensures technical risks and issues are driven to resolution.

  • Chairs the Engineering Change Board and Project Technical Reviews.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires a current Tier 5 (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) (U.S. Citizenship required) or requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry

  • 5+ years of experience leading a multi-disciplined engineering team that includes suppliers and customers

  • 5+ years of experience in leading a team of engineers, suppliers, and support personnel in the technical design, development, integration, and test of a large scale complex mechanical and fluid system test facility

  • Effectively communicate with technical and non-technical personnel at all organization levels including suppliers and customers

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience in a Chief Engineer or Lead Engineer role responsible for ensuring system and product integration across multiple disciplines

  • Demonstrated leadership for driving issue resolution and mitigating technical risk

  • Experience working with product/component developers and vendors who provide critical functionality to the overall system

  • Familiarity with ASME Piping Codes and Standards

  • Active SCI Clearance

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. 

Summary pay range: $146,200.00 - $197,800.00
