As a teenager on his family farm in western Ukraine, the closest Vadym Vasylyshyn could get to an aircraft was watching contrails across the sky.

Today, Vadym is a Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ Avionics Design and Analysis engineer working on flight data and voice recording systems in Seattle and Everett, Washington, thanks in part to our industry-leading tuition assistance benefit, the Learning Together Program (LTP).

“I consider myself very blessed to have Boeing provide this program,” Vadym said. “My schooling was not only paid for, but I get to work for a great company too. I was able to follow my passion. I encourage others to take this opportunity and follow their dreams.”

The Vasylyshyn family emigrated to the Puget Sound area of Washington state when Vadym was 15 years old. Traveling to America included his first airplane flight and a tour of the flight deck. “I had never seen a big airplane up close, so that was an exciting moment. Seeing the inside of a flight deck became a turning point for me.”

Following high school graduation, he enrolled in the Aviation Maintenance program at Clover Park Technical College and was later hired at our Composite Manufacturing Center in Frederickson, Washington, as a 787 Vertical Fin assembler.

Vadym applied to LTP right away and finished his associate degree in Applied Science and then earned a second associate degree in Engineering. He continued his education, earning his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington, all with help from LTP.

As Vadym furthered his education, he also earned promotions; becoming an Avionics technician. “This was a giant leap for me, yet here I was, sitting in the captain’s seat checking full functionality of flight systems and approving airworthiness of a Boeing 737 before its first flight.”

Vadym said he plans to earn his master’s degree, with an eye toward energy conservation and power systems. “The Learning Together Program is a gift that continues to help me reach my academic goals.”
