Boeing is seeking a Materials Process and Physics (MP&P) Engineer to join our team in the greater St. Louis area in Berkeley, Missouri. This person will be responsible for the failure analysis and material evaluation of mechanical components, including metallic and non-metallic materials (e.g. ceramics, composites, plastics, glass). They will collaborate closely with engineers across the enterprise to support primarily defense program development and production. Position requires consulting with customers to independently design and execute lab experiments which includes the use of (but not limited to) equipment such as digital microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, sectioning and cut-off machines, and hand tools such as micrometers and calipers. The applicant should possess a self-motivated attitude with attention to details, with an investigational problem-solving mindset.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct complex analysis to determine performance or reasons for failures of tools, materials, parts, or processes

  • Generate detailed technical reports summarizing the testing conducted while providing clear understandable conclusions

  • Explain complex technical concepts in a meaningful manner to non-technical customers

  • Ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations

  • Promote standardization across business activities

  • Integrate new technologies as appropriate

  • Implement corrective and preventive actions

  • Incorporate environmental health and safety, LEAN, and Quality principles into materials and processes, research, design and qualification, work procedures, and lab and office areas

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (e.g., aerospace, mechanical) or material science

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Master's or higher degree in engineering (e.g., aerospace, mechanical) or material science

  • Experience conducting failure analysis of mechanical components

  • Experience writing detailed technical reports

  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings

  • Experience using hand tools for dimensioning and measurements (e.g., calipers, micrometers)

  • Basic understanding of the principles of corrosion in aerospace materials

  • Knowledge of fractographic analysis and various failure modes (e.g., fatigue, ductile, brittle overload)

  • Knowledge of metallographic/materialographic processes and analyses

  • Knowledge of pressurized systems (e.g., hydraulic or pneumatic)

  • Experience with CAD software

  • Relevant experience in the aerospace industry

Typical Education/Experience:

Level 2:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master). Must have experience working in a laboratory environment conducting failure analysis of mechanical components and writing detailed technical reports. The applicant should also possess an investigational problem-solving mindset. Preferably, the candidate also possesses any combination of an advanced degree, experience with metallography, fractographic analysis and various failure modes, CAD software, knowledge and experience relevant to aerospace, and active security clearance.

Level 3:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). Must have experience working in a laboratory environment conducting failure analysis of mechanical components and writing detailed technical reports. The applicant should also possess an investigational problem-solving mindset. Preferably, the candidate also possesses any combination of an advanced degree, experience with metallography, fractographic analysis and various failure modes, CAD software, knowledge and experience relevant to aerospace, and active security clearance.

This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.

Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only.  Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary Pay Range:

Level 2: 64,000-114,00

Level 3: $79,000-140,000
