Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) are looking for a Software Engineer specializing in Autonomy to join Phantom Works Australia (PW‑A). PW‑A specialises in identifying, analysing and prototyping strategic capabilities that can be transitioned to a BDA business unit within a five‑year timeframe. We are seeking the very best talent from a diverse range of backgrounds to help grow and contribute to our innovative team. This role would contribute to the development and implementation of world leading strategic capabilities in a fast-paced rapid prototyping environment and observe its direct transition into real operational systems.

About the role

  • Apply systems thinking to architect and implement interoperable autonomy services within a broader ecosystem, including flight autonomy, mission autonomy, mission systems, devops and operational testing.
  • Rapidly prototype mission‑autonomy solutions in Python and/or C++ and iterate based on flight data and emerging technology trends.
  • Adapt designs on‑the‑fly to new problem spaces, ensuring solutions remain scalable, safe and compliant with defence standards.
  • Lead technical discussions, mentor peers and demonstrate best practice in code quality, testing and documentation.
  • Collaborate with aerospace, systems, data and security specialists to integrate autonomy into the air‑vehicle's flight stack.
  • Communicate design rationale clearly to senior leadership and external partners, championing a culture of continuous learning.
  • Take end-to-end ownership of software developed and deployed onto operational platforms.

Required:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in professional engineering roles (or equivalent combination of technical education and professional experience).
  • Tertiary qualification in software engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechatronics, aerospace engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Ability to work both as an independent contributor, and as an active collaborator within a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Strong software language proficiency (Python, C++ are highly desirable).
  • Clear technical communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the application context, and translate real-world constraints to algorithmic solutions and software implementations.
  • Natural curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Be an Australian citizen and hold, or have the ability to obtain a minimum NV-1 Australian Defence security clearance.

Desirable:

  • Experience in autonomous systems, robotics or related applications.
  • Prior involvement in agile, multidisciplinary prototype teams.

Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet Defence security requirements.
