The Opportunity

Join a world-class team sustaining the Royal Australian Air Force's airborne surveillance, communications and maritime patrol capability — the P‑8A Poseidon. We are seeking a motivated Flight Operations Engineer to join the P‑8A Flight Operations Team, contributing to aircraft performance, weight & balance, and Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) support that keeps pilots safe and mission-ready.

Why this role matters

  • Directly support RAAF pilots with the performance, loading and operational data they rely on for take-off, landing and mission safety.
  • Help protect Australia's borders by enabling safe, compliant and capable P‑8A operations.
  • Work alongside Product Support, engineering and maintenance teams on capability changes, reweigh activities and weapon/fleet upgrades.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage, update and validate aircraft performance calculator software and associated databases, and the aircraft loading system software and databases.
  • Review airport data and assess NOTAMs to support global operations and provide timely, accurate information to flight crews (24/7 on-call not required).
  • Support and conduct aircraft reweighs and contribute to weight & balance capability enhancement assessments.
  • Assist assessment of weight & balance impacts from P‑8A fleet and weapon upgrades.
  • Review and contribute updates to the NATOPS Flight Manual relating to performance and weight & balance.
  • Develop and deliver training for flight crew on performance, weight & balance, procedures and policy changes.
  • Provide technical input to safety risk assessments and hazard analyses.
  • Be an engaged team member helping ensure safe and maximised P‑8A capability.

Experience & qualifications

  • Must hold a tertiary Aerospace Engineering degree or related tertiary engineering qualification, and equivalent operational flight operations engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of applicable weight & balance and aircraft performance regulations for civilian and/or defence aviation.
  • Understanding of weight & balance factors across flight phases and experience managing aircraft loading systems.
  • Familiarity with aircraft performance limitations and experience with performance calculators (e.g. Boeing Onboard Performance Tool).
  • Well-developed communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multi‑discipline team.
  • Very high attention to detail.

Security requirement

  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens to meet defence security requirements.

Location

  • Based at RAAF Base Edinburgh, Adelaide — working closely with flight crews, maintenance and product support teams.
