Boeing Defense & Space (BDS) is seeking a motivated and Materials and Processes Engineer – Chemical/Contamination Control (Experienced or Mid-Level)to join our Materials and Process Engineering team located at the Boeing facility in Long Beach, California

This engineer will provide materials and process engineering support to C-17 and potentially other Boeing programs, particularly with elastomeric materials, coatings, chemicals, contamination control, other non-metallic materials and associated processes.  This support includes all lifecycle stages of the product: design, manufacturing, repair, and overhaul. Programs we support include the C-17, Space Launch Systems, CST-100 Starliner, KC-46, ORCA, and proprietary programs.

Our Materials and Process Engineering team in Southern California has earned the reputation within Boeing as a go-to organization for fast development of innovative materials and processes solutions for programs we support locally as well as local suppliers for other programs across Boeing. Our team includes three associate technical fellows recognized across the company as experts in metallic materials, composite materials and aerospace coatings and other non-metallic materials. With our variety of work, you won’t be bored!

Position Responsibilities:

  • Defines requirements for materials, processes, parts, tools, and equipment related to chemical processes, elastomers (rubbers, seals, etc.), petroleum fluids and lubrication, marking and identification, breathing oxygen systems, and other non-metallic materials used in the engineering design, manufacture and maintenance of products and approves their use. 

  • Produces specifications and other documents to manage the deployment of materials, processes, and any associated parts, tools, and equipment.

  • Maintains compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations.

  • Promotes standardization across business activities.

  • Evaluates emerging technologies for potential application to business needs.

  • Develops and qualifies new materials, processes, parts, tools, and equipment to meet requirements. Integrates new technologies as appropriate.

  • Manages test and audit programs to qualify suppliers to applicable requirements.

  • Conducts analysis to characterize performance or determine reasons for failure of tools, materials, parts or processes. Implements corrective and preventive actions.

  • Uses project management tools to meet cost, technical, and schedule requirements. 

  • Incorporates environmental health and safety, LEAN and Quality principles into (1) materials and processes, (2) research, design and qualification, (3) work procedures and (4) labs and office areas.

  • Develops proposals and business cases and presents them to leadership, customers, and other stakeholders.

  • Clearly communicates information and ideas to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message, using a variety of media.

  • Prepares/authors contract deliverables (CDRLs) for US Government and International contracts

  • Leads multidiscipline teams and working groups and communicates information to internal and external stakeholders

  • Supports aircraft and flight tests involving material and/or process changes

  • Reads, understands, and interprets engineering drawings and specifications (e.g., blueprint/schematic reading, specification, change, design)

  • Reads, understands, and interprets manufacturing plans

This position may require up 25% of travel domestically.

This position is onsite. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform most work onsite at the listed location.  This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future. There is some flexibility to work from home on an as-needed basis.

This position must meet export control compliance requirements. To meet export control compliance requirements, a “U.S. Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. §120.15 is required.  “U.S. Person” includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee. 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or non-US equivalent qualifications directly related to the work statement

  • 2+ years’ experience in material and process selection

  • 2+ years’ experience with elastomeric materials and associated manufacturing processes

  • 1+ years’ experience with petroleum fluids and lubrication

  • 1+ years’ experience in test program design (e.g., design of experiments, test plan development, validation)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in chemical or materials engineering (or equivalent)

  • 3+ years’ experience working in the aerospace industry

  • 2+ years’ experience working with aircraft components and assemblies

  • 1+ years’ experience with contamination control on breathing oxygen systems

  • Knowledge of attributes and performance capabilities of various analytical laboratories in performing chemistry or chemical analysis

  • Knowledge of plastics and associated manufacturing techniques

  • Knowledge of contamination control principles that enable the translation of end item system requirements into contamination control plans and the ability to oversee and verify implementation

  • Knowledge of corrosion principles (such as crevice, stress, dissimilar metals) and experience with corrosion control

Typical Education/Experience:

Level 2: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 2 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Level 3:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications. In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation:

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. 

Typical summary pay ranges:

Level 2: $94,350 - $127,650

Level 3: $114,750 - $155,250
