The Integrated Design Engineering Organization is seeking a highly motivated Satellite Solar Array and Battery Mechanical Design Engineer (Lead or Senior) to join the Space Mission Systems Satellite Engineering Team in El Segundo, CA.

This candidate will be a part of a high-performing engineering team that is immersed in development and high non-recurring projects. The candidate will be accountable to provide all aspects of mechanical design engineering support of the solar array and battery technologies, which include designing substrates, yoke structures, panel layouts, battery packs, etc. The candidate will be required to work closely with our Solar Array and Battery REA and Analysis team members as well as our partnering organizations from Systems Engineering, Stress, Dynamics, Materials & Processes, Production Engineering, Quality, Supplier Management, and Spectrolab. This candidate will need to work closely with their respective Technical Lead Engineers, Management, and Program Leadership to support the program deliverables. This role will include accountability for all Satellite Solar Array technologies supporting Government and Commercial Satellites with some additional support across other space applications. The candidate should have experience working with Solar Array and/or Battery technologies (substrates, cells, panels, integration, system requirements, etc). The candidate must exemplify the Boeing Behaviors in day-to-day operations. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Define Solar Array Design and Analysis requirements while partnering closely with other engineering groups, manufacturing, operations, procurement, suppliers, customers, and program personnel to qualify, deliver, and launch solar array technologies
  • Responsible for overseeing and providing guidance for all solar array technical issues. Work closely to ensure proper RCCA methodologies implemented, and critical issues actively communicated to executive leadership, program leaders, customers, and partnering chief engineers
  • Perform mechanical engineering with layouts, preliminary strength analysis to support trade studies, detailed design, testing requirements, materials, processes, and tools, define interfaces
  • Engage in new business campaigns, reviewing bid models and providing technical input for appropriate technology insertions
  • Work with Solar Array Chief Engineer and team to support and lead recurring Corrective Action Board efforts
  • Partner with other Solar Array TLEs and functional management to provide technical guidance, conduct technical reviews, and approve engineering releases
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to fellow engineers
  • Contribute to supplier development, test and production activities to optimize the design and achieve program goals
  • Identify lean opportunities and support in implementation of cost/schedule savings initiatives as appropriate
  • Provide onsite technical troubleshooting support when appropriate
  • Partner with Engineering, Common Products, Operations, and Functional Leadership in EAC definition and reviews
  • Lead project planning and ensure execution on program commitments
  • Evaluate test data to validate components and systems against design requirements and objectives
  • Develop mechanical system and component designs using 3-D Computer Aided Design tools, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards and/or other design methods, provide product definition to other engineering groups, production operations, suppliers and external customers throughout the product lifecycle
  • Contribute to supplier development, test and production activities to optimize the design and achieve program goals

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Top Secret/SCI clearance Post Start is required
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • Level 4: 5+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Strongly preferred Active TS/SCI and SSBI
  • Level 5: 10+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 12+ years of experience in a Mechanical Engineering role
  • 5+ year of experience in Solar Array and/or Battery Design and Manufacturing
  • 3+ year of experience with design and analysis of metallic and composite materials

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range for (Level 4) Lead: $124,100.00 - $167,900.00

Summary pay range for (Level 5) Senior: $146,200.00 - $197,800.00
