The Role:

Working within the BDUK Products and Services Safety Management System and the BDUK Chief Engineer Products and Services Safety.Lead safety investigation across, process governance and improvement including application of Just Culture across BDUK programmes.

The role has the following key responsibilities:

1.Lead Safety Investigation mentor and lead practitioner to establish governance and standard setting for all safety investigations conducted by BDUK to assure the timeliness and quality of investigations.

2.Establish a governance and mentor programme to establish and maintain competency in all existing and new safety investigators.

3.Working closely with the BDUK Occurrence Manager and Safety Risk Lead to establish trending and the identification of repetitively weak barriers which should be targeted in the safety reporting tool and Incident XP tools.

4.Acting as the focal for safety investigations across BDUK ensuring investigations are coordinated with the relevant functional managers and leads.

5.Lead and govern Event Review Groups.

6.Working closely with the Programme SMS Leads to coordinate the tracking of identified safety investigation recommendations to closure within their area of responsibility.

7.Work closely with the BDUK Safety Promotion and Training Lead to produce SMS Promotion campaigns based around the investigation team findings.These should also be fed back into appropriate SMS and HF training mediums.

8.Manage Safety Investigation metrics using the BDUK SMS tool. This includes the design and continued development of appropriate metrics and coordination of safety investigation inputs to relevant safety meetings.

9.Lead the development and delivery of safety investigation training including supporting the delivery of HF and SMS training for all staff as required.

10.Work with the wider Boeing Enterprise to support investigation forums and share best practice across the wider Boeing safety investigation community.

11.Interact with and establish forums at UK level for the sharing of regional and customer best practice amongst defence units and contracted organisations.

Travel within the UK is expected and some overseas travel may be required.

Essential competencies:

  • HNC (minimum) in Engineering or equivalent operator experience in flying or support to aviation activities.
  • Occurrence Investigation and Occurrence Review Group training iaw MAA RA1440 or equivalent.
  • Formal Safety Management Systems training and experience.
  • Significant experience in performing SMS/occurrence safety investigations
  • Experience in using military or civil safety reporting tools
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead on the planning of work, and develop/use meaningful metrics to Able to effectively identify and execute opportunities to improve existing processes and training to provide improved safety mitigations and error management strategies
  • Lead on the removal of obstacles by identifying where and what help is needed and coordinating with the appropriate leaders and team members
  • The candidate should possess strong communication skills, technical competency, and skills within formal reporting writing tools such as MS Word
  • The role will have significant UK MoD customer, supplier and wider Boeing interface and therefore a person who is diplomatic whilst being strong minded is essential.
  • The ability to obtain UK Security Clearance

Desirable competencies:

  • Experience with the use of common safety tools such as Risk Registers, Bow Ties including the use of Incident XP for safety investigation results
  • Experience using MoD’s ASIMS/DASORs for in-service occurrence reporting and mandatory reporting of events to the military or civil authorities
  • HF Instructor or Examiner experience
