Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Sand Blast Operator to join our team in Portland, Oregon.

As a Sand Blast Operator, you will be an essential part of our team, transforming aircraft components into pristine surfaces ready for the next stage of production. This dynamic role allows you to work with advanced sandblasting technology, where your skills will directly impact on the quality and performance of our aerospace products. You will engage in hands-on operations, ensuring that every part is meticulously prepared by removing rust, corrosion, and contaminants. Position Responsibilities:

  • Obtain work assignments from various sources, including tank lines, paint departments, and incoming racks, as required.

  • Operate a personal computer to access necessary information, such as drawings and specifications for production parts.

  • Maintain inventories of materials needed for blasting operations, including blasting sand, tape, racks, and nozzles.

  • Coordinate with customers, such as the paint shop and machinists, to ensure the correct finish is achieved.

  • Ensure the appropriate sandblast medium is selected and prepared prior to the blasting operation.

  • Use basic math to measure production parts and identify areas to be blasted according to drawings or rejection tags.

  • Operate an enclosed sandblast booth to prepare aircraft parts for subsequent processes, such as painting and plating.

  • Notify facilities personnel when equipment malfunctions occur, ensuring timely repairs.

  • Document completed operations on work orders, including the correct finish, quantity of parts, and compliance with specifications.

  • Provide protective wrapping for sensitive aircraft parts to prevent contamination prior to release to the shop.

  • Maintain a shop log of incoming and outgoing work to accurately track the progress and movement of aircraft parts.

  • Position containers and supplies using material handling equipment, such as electric pullers and pallet jacks.

  • Handle, use, and dispose of hazardous chemicals and solutions in accordance with safety regulations.

  • Wear personal protective equipment and observe safety precautions while operating blasting equipment.

  • Consult with supervisors or other personnel regarding process or job-related issues as needed.

  • Operate the sandblasting machine to effectively remove rust, scale, dirt, and corrosion from parts and assemblies.

  • Select proper abrasives and adjust air pressure to ensure effective cleaning without damaging parts.

  • Position parts and materials correctly in the sandblasting machine for optimal results.

  • Direct and control the flow of abrasive material to prevent damage to parts and ensure thorough cleaning.

  • Report any equipment malfunctions to the supervisor for prompt resolution.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as standing for long periods, reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with dust, high noise, metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience working with detailed work instructions or reading and interpreting blueprints and drawings

  • Speak, Read and Write fluent English

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training or experience with reading and interpreting drawings or blueprints

  • Crane operation

  • Electrical and Mechanical Assembly experience

Typical Education & Experience:

  • High school graduate or GED preferred.

Relocation:

  • Relocation assistance is not a negotiable benefit for this position. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range: $24.00 - $48.58 per hour
