Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Tool Grinder to join our team in Portland, Oregon.

As a Tool Grinder, you will be the craftsman behind the precision that drives our aerospace manufacturing processes. This exciting role allows you to work with advanced grinding technologies, where your expertise will shape and sharpen cutting tools that are essential for producing high-quality components. You will engage in hands-on operations, utilizing your skills to ensure that every tool meets stringent specifications and performance standards. Position Responsibilities:

  • Obtain work assignments based on priority, schedule dates, or instructions from the team leader or supervisor.
  • Acquire appropriate engineering drawings, specifications, and sketches necessary for the assigned job.
  • Ensure that the correct grinding wheels, setup tools, and fixtures are available and free from visible defects.
  • Identify the type of setup required by reviewing work orders, tie-in sheets, and other relevant documents.
  • Check the machine setup and inspect parts completed by previous operators to ensure safe working conditions.
  • Select and verify the condition of machine accessories and holding devices, such as chucks and vises.
  • Attach machine accessories, tools, and fixtures using appropriate tools and equipment, ensuring proper installation.
  • Download CNC programs to the machine controller as required for the assigned tasks.
  • Select, form, and check cutting tools or grinding wheels according to specifications and drawings.
  • Load and unload grinding wheels and tools, ensuring they are dressed and qualified after unloading.
  • Set machine coordinates and index points according to conventional or CNC documents, including cutter offsets and tool heights.
  • Run CNC programs to machine grind precision cutting tools, entering values to ensure correct programming.
  • Adjust machine settings to correct grinding issues or prepare the machine for the next operation in sequence.
  • Monitor the machine during operation for unusual vibrations or sounds, ensuring smooth operation.
  • Perform hand honing, edge preparation, and deburring as necessary to complete assigned work.
  • Check completed work to ensure compliance with drawings and specifications, documenting any defects.
  • Use precision optical and physical measuring instruments to verify cutting tool geometry.
  • Laser etch, chemical etch, or vibro-engrave part numbers on cutting tools as required.
  • Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with safety regulations and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Maintain personal training certifications and consult with team leaders or supervisors when assistance is needed.
  • Plan and layout grinding templates and modify existing tools, dies, and fixtures as required.
  • Perform brazing or soldering as necessary to complete work assignments.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.
  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.
  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.
  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.
  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.
  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of experience utilizing and following detailed work instructions, reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • 1+ years of experience utilizing software applications for internet navigation, email, Microsoft Suite and/or other specialized computer applications.
  • 1+ year of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • 1+ year experience setting up and operating manual and CNC Machines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduated from a Machinist Apprenticeship program or completed a Machining Certificate
  • 1+ year experience in CAD/CAM software

Typical Education & Experience:

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range: $31.00 – $54.24/ hour
