Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Vacuum Furnace & Heat Treat Operator Steel A to join our Fabrication team in Portland, Oregon.

As a Vacuum Furnace & Heat Treat Operator Steel A, you will be integral to our manufacturing operations, focusing on the precise treatment of metals essential to our production processes. Your role will involve operating advanced vacuum furnaces to perform various heat treatment processes, such as annealing, tempering, and brazing, while adhering to stringent safety and quality protocols. You will work closely with engineering teams to enhance operational efficiency and address any technical challenges that may arise. Your meticulous attention to detail will be crucial as you document procedures, monitor equipment performance, and conduct calculations to ensure optimal results. This position requires a strong technical background and a collaborative spirit, as you will mentor and support less experienced team members

Position Responsibilities

  • Operate the vacuum furnace for heat treating, drawing, tempering, annealing, normalizing, brazing, diffusion bonding, and forming metals sensitive to atmospheric contamination.

  • Prepare materials for furnace operation and collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing Development to optimize vacuum furnace capabilities.

  • Document test sequences and procedures for assembly and processing of parts.

  • Determine time, temperature, quenching medium, and sequence of operations for unidentified steel types.

  • Work with Research Engineers on developing new processes and materials.

  • Derive information from shop orders, blueprints, specifications, and sketches for production.

  • Operate vacuum diffusion pumps and associated equipment, adjusting controls for heat cycles and temperatures.

  • Maintain equipment through routine preventative work, including heating elements and cleanliness, and control the furnace atmosphere using inert gases.

  • Assist lower-grade employees in heat treating metals and perform hardness tests to ensure proper heating and quenching.

  • Load, unload, quench, clean, and stack materials, ensuring correct loading techniques to minimize warping.

  • Use mathematical formulas, including trigonometry and algebra, to calculate time and temperature for varying material sizes and thicknesses.

  • Record pertinent information on chart recorders, work orders, and log sheets, ensuring accurate documentation, including traceable information in logbooks or computers.

  • Monitor heat treat ovens for proper functioning, perform process checks, and document results.

  • Lead or assist in quenching heat-treated parts in appropriate mediums and request Quality Assurance inspections post-process.

  • Consult with supervision and other sources to resolve problems, coordinate certification requirements for equipment, and handle hazardous materials responsibly while maintaining personal and tool certifications.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience using basic Microsoft Office and office computing systems

  • Experience using basic math (e.g. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division)

  • Ability to lift, push or pull up to 35 pounds

  • 1+ years experience using hand tools and/or hand-held power tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years experience monitoring vacuum furnaces and program control panels to adjust heat treat oven to proper temperatures and cycles for required specifications

Typical Education & Experience

High school graduate or GED preferred.
