Job Description Summary

At Boeing, we are all innovators on a mission to connect, protect, explore and inspire. From the sea bed to outer space, you’ll learn and grow, contributing to work that shapes the world. Find your future with us.
An exciting opportunity has become available to join Boeing Defence UK as an Engineering Lead based at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced, technically diverse, engineer with great inter-personal skills to join and lead a team of simulation and infrastructure support engineers who oversee the on-site operation, update and maintenance of a complex suite of training simulation applications, equipment, infrastructure and services for the RAF’s Gladiator programme.

This is a fast paced, customer focussed role that supports the RAF in the delivery of operationally important team and collective training exercises that join geographically distributed air and ground simulation equipment together in a single, consistent, synthetic training environment. The role is based, on-site, at RAF Waddington where virtual working will not be possible. The role, with it’s focus on leadership and the provision of strategic direction to the subordinate engineering teams will require up to 25% travel both nationally and internationally.

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Technical leadership, planning, direction, day-to-day tasking and mentoring of the on-site simulation and system administration teams with a specific focus on the simulation and synthetic environment systems that drive team and collective training
  • Coordinating all activity relating to the Synthetic Environment, IT Infrastructure and frontend IT services in support of the programme, liaising with programme manager to plan appropriate schedules of activity in order to minimise operational disruption.
  • Set technical direction and practices to both the Simulation Support Team and the System Administration Team
  • Leading the implementation of technical exercise configuration of the core system to deliver training in line with the customer exercise schedule
  • Co-ordinate and prioritise the on-site simulation and system administration teams activities relating to incident management, change, release and configuration management of the Synthetic Environment and IT infrastructure.
  • Reporting on technical progress of changes to the Service Delivery Manager and other stakeholders within the business and programme
  • Supporting the Chief Programme Engineer and Deputy Chief Programme Engineer in planning of the creation and integration of new capabilities into the core system.
  • Capacity planning, backup and disaster recovery planning.
  • Manage configuration control and the underlying baselines of the systems
  • Ensure change control and release governance to ensure strict configuration alignment for all Synthetic Environment and IT environments used in support of the live service.
  • Ensure appropriate system and operating documentation is maintained to ensure the safe and proper operation of IT services in support of the programme.
  • Ensure all system administration and maintenance is planned and co-ordinated in line with operational service availability and schedules.

The Engineering Lead will work closely with the Chief Programme Engineer and Deputy Chief Programme Engineer to maintain the overall quality, safety and integrity of the system including the management of integration activities, the technical planning of new capabilities and the tasking of technical team members as agreed with the Service Delivery Manager.

Crucially this is a “forward-looking” position to ensure technical pre-planning of future training events and the deconfliction of integration activities involving modifications and changes to the core simulation system.  You will be integrated into a fast-paced and dynamic customer focused environment and stretched to achieve your potential.

Your wellbeing is also important to us and we strive to find a healthy life balance and with an ethical team culture and strong emphasis on openness, collaboration, innovation, safety and first time quality.

To be successful, you will have good collective training domain knowledge and experience of contemporary simulation and synthetic environment technologies, system engineering principles and simulation architectures and methodologies (including HLA and DIS)

  • A "drive to action" approach with the ability to be resilient and flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Working collaboratively with other engineers, specialists and functional support team-members to achieve a sustainable outcome
  • Experience in developing and applying continuous improvement to process and productivity
  • In addition, you will be working on a military airbase and subject to security procedures in accordance with the UK Government’s policies for civilians working in MOD facilities
