Boeing Defense, Space, & Security (BDS), Vertical Lift Division is seeking a Senior Handling Qualities, Guidance and Control Engineer (Level 4 or 5) to join the Flight Technology team in sunny Mesa, AZ. Our team creates the next generation products and services for the BDS business unit.  We participate in all phases of the design, test, and support of the Apache Helicopter, AH-6, Chinook helicopter, V-22, and developmental aircraft.

The ideal candidate will help lead a high-performing team that directly supports the design of new and modified rotorcraft from a stability, flight control, and handing qualities perspective. As a key member of our team, you will support the design of flight control systems and model/analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team of high performing engineers, including coordinate with program leadership, establish and meet technical, quality and efficiency metrics, and develop team members in the key Flying Qualities skill areas

  • Apply control theory to lead the design of control laws that achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, system failure robustness, and loads considerations

  • Develop and validate physics-based linear and non-linear flight simulation models that include mathematical models of various rotorcraft components (main rotor, tail rotor, fuselage) and participate in wind-tunnel/flight testing to support model validation

  • Support the design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective

  • Lead pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation, hardware in the loop laboratory, and flight testing in support of vehicle design and analysis

  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other disciplines such as aerodynamics, dynamics, avionic systems, and structural design to optimize vehicle characteristics

  • Support training/mentoring other team members

  • Approximately 10% travel is required for testing at off-site locations

This position is expected to be 100% onsite.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options. 

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience): (see education and experience for the levels below)

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 5 or more years of experience with Matlab, C, C++, and/or FORTRAN

  • 5 or more years of experience in experience with aircraft stability and flight control laws

  • 5 or more years of experience functioning in a role that requires team/project leadership

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 10 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (level 5)

  • Has significant experience modeling rotorcraft flight dynamics models

  • Currently holds a security clearance

  • Masters degree or Doctorate in engineering field (mechanical or aerospace)

  • Experience supporting rotorcraft flight test

  • Experience designing flight control laws for rotorcraft

  • Rotorcraft stability and control experience

Typical Education/Experience:

Level 4:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in mechanical or aerospace engineering (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Level 5:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in mechanical or aerospace engineering (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary Pay Range Level 4: $126,650 - $171,350

Summary Pay Range Level 5: $153,000 - $207,000
