Boeing Commercial Airplanes is excited to offer opportunities for a Development Specialist Tooling A to join our Fabrication team in Portland, Oregon.

As a Development Specialist Tooling A, you will be at the forefront of innovation in cutting tool design and development, playing a pivotal role in enhancing manufacturing efficiency and product quality. Your expertise will enable you to collaborate with cross-functional teams, leveraging your technical knowledge to create advanced tooling solutions that meet the dynamic needs of production. Position Responsibilities

  • Develop carbide and high-speed cutting tools, as well as form tools, in conjunction with tool design and research units to meet production requirements.

  • Collaborate with Tool Design, Methods Engineering, Manufacturing Shops, and other authorized personnel throughout all phases of assignments.

  • Interpret prints, sketches, and verbal information to execute assignments effectively.

  • Perform necessary layout work to facilitate the completion of assignments.

  • Determine and develop the required hook, rake, angle, shape, and finish of cutting tools.

  • Plan the sequence of operations and set up, operate, or observe the operation of various machines to complete assignments.

  • Utilize precision measuring instruments to ensure accuracy in work assignments.

  • Lead and guide lower classified employees, providing assistance and support as needed.

  • Develop aids and tools to facilitate work assignments and improve efficiency.

  • Interface with machine operators and tool engineers to ensure the availability of special cutters and obtain daily work requirements.

  • Coordinate with machine operators to develop special cutting tools and recommend appropriate cutter speeds and feeds.

  • Evaluate new cutting tools, such as carbide indexable tools and coatings, in collaboration with vendors.

  • Use AutoCAD software to design and define special coated tools according to engineering drawings and Boeing specifications.

  • Maintain organized files of vendors and suppliers, including contact information and catalogs, and update as necessary.

  • Make sketches, prepare orders, and record information pertinent to special cutting tools, ensuring accurate documentation.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience using hand tools and/or hand-held power tools

  • 3+ years of experience utilizing Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • 3+ years experience setting up and operating Manual and CNC Machines

  • Experience utilizing and following detailed work instructions, reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, or specifications

  • Ability to read blueprints with the understanding of Dimensioning and Tolerancing

Typical Education & Experience:

High school graduate or GED preferred.

Summary pay range: $35.00 - $56.97/ hour
