Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Boeing Electronic Products is seeking a talented and highly motivated ASIC/FPGA Design Engineering Manager to develop state-of-the-art digital ICs/SoCs and support the most critical programs across the enterprise.  This is an exciting time for the organization where we’re onboarding design and verification engineers at every level at three new sites, and the new managers will help lead the hiring to build their teams from the ground up in Kent, WA or Tukwila, WA to support this growth.

Boeing Electronic Products is part of Space, Intelligence and Weapons Systems based in El Segundo, CA and operates as a small, focused business of ~500 engineers providing advanced electronics for programs and platforms across the company and externally direct to strategic customers.  Our mission is to seamlessly integrate with Boeing programs to provide electronics units leveraging our standard products, COTS components, or custom developments.

Our diverse development portfolio provides opportunities to learn with exposure to the breadth of the Boeing product line – approximately half our design work is within the Space Intelligence & Weapons Systems (SI&WS) business unit, and half is from other parts of Boeing (AvionX; Mobility, Surveillance & Bombers; Air Dominance; and Disruptive Computing & Networking).

The products we design range from complex digitally beamformed phased arrays for constellation satellite programs to computing and networking equipment for commercial airplanes. The ASICs and FPGAs that we design are at the heart of Boeing’s products and platforms.  We leverage leading-edge technology and work with world-class partners to provide some of the most complex SoCs in the world.  We develop robust, high-performance custom processors using the latest ARM IP to enable high-integrity, low SWAP-C flight computers. And we're applying the latest digital IC design processes with industry-best tools to enable applications that cut across every domain at Boeing.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage a portfolio of ASIC/FPGA development programs, typically two to four within a product area, and guide the technical baseline and program execution.
  • Hire and support the ASIC/FPGA engineers, including project leads, working programs within your portfolio.
  • Implement common design practices used across the wider department and ensure consistent first-time quality for both ASIC and FPGA designs through the use of a comprehensive verification process.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and partnerships with customers and strategic suppliers.
  • Lead or contribute to individual programs and IRAD projects and support new business and proposals for the department, including architecture development and the selection of appropriate technologies to meet mission requirements.
  • Train and mentor less experienced engineers and project leads while building effective teams.
  • The ideal candidate will excel in both the engineering technical acumen/excellence required for this role while being an engaging and motivating people leader, including committing to:
    • Prioritizing the development and career growth of his/her employees and team.
    • Inspiring and empowering your team through collaboration, communication, and caring.
    • Building and nurturing an inclusive culture by seeking out different perspectives, speaking up with ideas or concerns, and actively listening to teammates and stakeholders.
    • Ensuring a psychologically safe work environment where employees can freely and proactively raise safety, quality, and schedule concerns as soon as they are known.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
  • 5+ years of experience working with ASICs or FPGAs.
  • One (1) or more years of demonstrated success leading development efforts, including project management and earned value tracking.
  • One (1) or more years of experience leading a technical team or managing in an engineering organization.
  • Familiarity with FAA DO-254 certification.
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability to effectively communicate at all levels of management, customers, and partners.
  • Master of Science in an engineering discipline.
  • Previous management experience.
  • Ability to build a safe environment of inclusion, transparency, and trust.
  • Leadership skills to lead and influence positive outcomes.
  • Previous experience in leading, mentoring, and engaging individuals and teams.
  • Experience providing active mentorship and career guidance.
  • Can up-level existing team by hiring high performance talent, growing leaders and helping underperforming members.
