Boeing is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to join our team in Albuquerque, NM supporting advanced concepts development with optical design, analysis, integration, and test.  In addition, this position will support modeling and simulation of optical systems, and analysis of test data to anchor models and develop improvements to existing optical systems.  We are seeking a candidate with a broad skill set in multiple areas such as: infrared/electro-optical (IR/EO), visible, ultraviolet (UV), photonics, fiber, high energy laser, and optics technology (e.g., focal plane arrays, cryogenic cooling, optical design, fiber-optics, lasers, detectors, pointing systems, telescopes, optical components, interferometry, high power sources and amplifiers, target recognition, scanning and staring sensors, high band width atmospheric compensation, optical communications, optical measurement systems, signal processing, integrated optics, laser radar, adaptive optics, opto-mechanics, imaging and projection optics, and diffractive and nonlinear optics). This position will work with extremely talented, high performing, multi-disciplined engineering teams to work on start-of-the-art adaptive optics and optical imaging systems. This position will work both at our Albuquerque LEOS site and on Kirtland AFB.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops and validates electromagnetic requirements for electrical\electronic systems, mechanical systems, interconnects and structures. Develops architectures to integrate systems and components into higher level systems and platforms. 
  • Performs complicated trade studies, modeling, simulation and other forms of analysis to predict component, interconnects and system performance and to optimize design around established requirements. Defines and conducts critical tests of various kinds to validate performance of designs to requirements
  • Defines and conducts tests to validate performance of designs to requirements. Works with suppliers and partners to ensure compliance to requirements. 
  • Coordinates with customer to establish key requirements and project objectives.
  • Works on crew to test and validate designs of complex systems.  Occasional night work is required.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance, for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience): 

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 5+ years experience with the interrelationships between components of systems and plans, anticipating future events, and applying the principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance
  • 5+ years experience performing modeling and/or simulation of Electro-Optical and Infrared systems with a technical computing language, such as Matlab or Mathematica
  • 3+ years experience with design, development, testing, and troubleshooting of advanced Electronic Systems, i.e. Electro-Optical Guidance Systems, Radar Tests and/or RF Seeker

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • MS or higher degree in optics, opto electronics engineering
  • PhD in Optics
  • 5+ years experience working with adaptive optics systems
  • 5+ years experience designing and integrating optical systems
  • Optical System Integration Knowledge of multi-discipline integration issues applicable to infrared/electro-optical (IR/EO), visible, ultraviolet (UV), photonics, fiber, high energy laser, and optics, including reliability, availability, maintainability, testability, supportability, mechanical design, packaging, low observables, electrical, software, configuration management, environmental constraints, safety, human factors.

Typical Education & Experience: 

Lead (Level 4):
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. 
Relocation: This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility. NOTE: Basic relocation is available for internal candidates, based on candidate eligibility.

Senior (Level 5):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Please note that the salary information shown below is a general guideline only.  Salaries are based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

Summary pay range (Lead Level 4) : $118,150 – $159,850

Summary pay range (Senior Level 5) : $145,350– $196,650
