The opportunity

We are seeking an exceptional Engineering Leader to join Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) as the E-7A Platform Chief Engineer, to support the world class Wedgetail AEW&C capability. This senior leadership role is accountable for the safety, quality and technical excellence of engineering services delivered under the Australian Wedgetail Head Agreement Deed. The scope of work includes but is not limited to fleet sustainment services and design changes to the Airborne Mission Segment (AMS) and Ground Support Segments (GSS).

The role will report to the BDA Engineering Product and Service Safety Leader and support the E-7 Engineering Management team to deliver world class engineering services to the Defence customer.

This role can be located in either Brisbane Qld or Williamtown NSW.

As the Platform Chief Engineer, you will:

  • Ensure Safety, Mission Assurance and Integrity of all Engineering Services delivered in support of the Australian Airborne Early Warning and Control E-7A aircraft and its Ground Support Segments.
  • Be the final design authority and hold accountability for the Australian AEW&C technical baseline.
  • Be the key customer and regulator point of contact for technical support and technical issue resolution including product safety issues.
  • Provide technical leadership to a large multi-disciplinary engineering team.
  • Have management duties for a small number of direct reports (deputies) that support the Chief Engineer in their role.
  • Be responsible for compliance and adaptation of Boeing Defence Australia's Engineering Management System to deliver on contractual and compliance requirements of the program (e.g. ISO9001, ISO9100, DASR 21J, DISP, DASR SMS).
  • Oversee and establish Technical Design Reviews for key development activities
  • Assess competency engineering staff and authorize those staff to operate on E-7A programs.


To be considered for the role you will have:

  • A Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Electronics, Software or Electrical Engineering.
  • A proven and demonstrated track record of successfully leading large multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver products and/or services.
  • Demonstrated ability to use and tailor Systems Engineering methods and techniques across the entire lifecycle of a product.
  • Hold or qualify for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status with Engineers Australia or an equivalent professional body.
  • A minimum of 15 Years of relevant Engineering experience.
  • A High level and practical understanding of ASDEFCON contracting requirements.
  • Be familiar with and have experience working in accordance with Global Trade Control (GTC) requirements, specifically the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITARs) and Defence Export Controls.
  • Experience overseeing or managing the development and deployment of complex software products is highly regarded.
  • Working knowledge of the Defence Aviation Safey Regulations (or equivalent framework). Previous experience as a Form 4 holder is highly regarded. This position may hold designation of authority to carry out responsibilities on behalf of the Head of Military Design Organisation (HMDO).
