The Airplane Safety Engineering (ASE) organization at Boeing is seeking senior or lead level Systems Safety Engineers with current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) designee authorization to join us. The ASE organization is part of the Chief Aerospace Safety Office (CASO) and is responsible for execution of airplane-level safety analyses as well as coaching / guiding system-level safety analyses for commercial airplane products.

This position offers flexibility for both on-site work in Everett, WA, and remote work options. Candidates residing outside of Washington State may work remotely but should be prepared for occasional travel to Everett for in-person collaboration, typically a few weeks each year. For candidates located in the Puget Sound area, on-site presence is required.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads system research and analysis to identify potential or investigate reported in-service fleet hazards, risks, and safety concerns and quantifies impact.
  • Leads identifying safety and mission assurance issue systemic root causes and recommends corrective actions using industry best practices.
  • Leads collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to define, validate, and integrate safety, mission success, and airworthiness requirements; incorporates into designs, operations, and procedures.
  • Leads, influences or reviews tests, analyses, inspections, audits, and simulations to verify system meets defined safety and mission assurance requirements.
  • Leads creation of aerospace safety and mission assurance tools and processes.
  • Leads documentation of complex safety analysis, hazard mitigation, validation and verification activities in compliance with relevant customer and regulatory safety standards.
  • Develops safety plan strategies and coordinates safety and corrective action plans with programs.
  • Demonstrates safety hazard risk mitigations and control methods to the customer and regulators.
  • Leads ensuring mission success through execution of Mission Assurance activities throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Establishes global safety advocacy strategies, training, tools, and methods.​

Work Authorization:

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills / Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • Current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) designee authorization as an individual designee (Designated Engineering Representative, DER)or Organization Delegation Authorization (ODA) member.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible engineering experience in at least one of the following technical specialties: avionics, electrical systems, mechanical systems, powerplant systems, or flight control systems.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills / Experience):

  • 4+ years of experience working with FAA authorization for delegated functions related to systems or safety analysis for FAA Order 8110.37F Charts A, B, C1 and/or C2, as applicable.
  • Familiarity for implementation of system development aspects in safety assessments, specifically, assignment of Functional Development Assurance Levels (FDALs) and Item Development Assurance Levels (IDALs) as described in Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) 4754A/B Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems/ARP 4761A Appendix P Guidelines for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Aircraft, Systems, and Equipment.
  • Familiarity for project oversight and implementation of safety artifacts as described in SAE ARP 4761/A Guidelines for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Aircraft, Systems, and Equipment.
  • Demonstration of project work involving FAA cert basis development, Issue Papers, Exemptions, and AC materials, as applicable.Demonstration of project work involving EASA/JAA certification basis development, LODs, CRIs, CS/AMJ materials, as applicable.
  • Knowledge of aviation product liability.

Typical Education/Experience:

  • Senior Level 4: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
  • Lead Level 5: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

  • This position offers relocation based on candidate eligibility.

Pay Range Summary:

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.  

  • Summary pay range for Senior Level (Level 4): $128,350 - $173,650

  • Summary pay range for Lead level (Level 5): $157,250– $212,750
