We are a product led analytics group within Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), transforming the way business is run using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML). We are looking for a Senior Manager (Level L) – Applied Data Science to be a thought leader in how to design, implement, manage and scale our AI&ML products for the entire BDS ecosystem. You will join a growing BDS Data Analytics team that supports AI&ML products for internal stakeholders and external customers, across all business functions. You will report to the Senior Manager of Applied Data Science and work closely with our leadership and business partners.  This position can be based in Arlington, VA, Berkeley, MO, Denver, CO, Mesa, AZ, Miami, FL, Ridley Park, PA, Seal Beach, CA or Seattle, WA.

Position Responsibilities:

  • A thoughtful leader that understands the latest trends and state of art technologies and capabilities in AI&ML
  • Manage and work with the AI&ML development team with a dozen+ members
  • Work with executives and fellow data scientists to define mission, vision, strategy and roadmap to build the best AI&ML solutions for our internal use-cases.
  • Help evaluate new AI data technologies and tools.
  • Establish and maintain data science development, deployment and monitoring/maintenance standards and establish best practices in data science development.
  • Build empathy for our employees, customers and stakeholders and deliver AI&ML solutions that have measurable impact on the business
  • Work with product managers to deeply understand business requirements and constraints
  • Work with software developers, data engineers, data scientists, and technical leads to convert business problems into actionable execution plans, to drive AI&ML execution for key initiatives.
  • Build strong relationships with our internal team and business partners
  • Understand the data science lifecycle.
  • Understand the requirements of data science projects.
  • Identify new opportunities to leverage data science across BDS.
  • Partner with other teams such as Engineering, Design and Product Management to identify problems that need to be solved by data science.
  • Broad understanding of common data science methodologies such as supervised/unsupervised learning, text analytics, deep learning, reinforcement learning, Generative AI, etc.
  • Work closely with HR and Recruiting to expand the team, including sourcing candidates, interviewing candidates, participating in conferences/events, and on-boarding new data science employees.
  • Identify appropriate training on data science process, tools, and technologies for the data science team.
  • Ability to communicate data science work and results to the upper management.
  • Encourage development and sharing of data science work and internal best practices and foster cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Strong quantitative background

This position is hybrid. This means that the selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.  This is at the hiring team’s discretion and could potentially change in the future.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g. computer science, engineering, statistics, operations research, information systems, or similar quantitative fields)
  • 5+ years of experience in one or more of the following programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, Scala. Python preferred
  • 5+ years of experience with various machine learning methods such as regression, clustering, classification, decision trees, natural language processing, ensemble methods, support vector machines (SVM), deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc.
  • Experience leading an Agile team using Agile methodologies
  • 3+ years of experience leading teams and direct reports

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Machine Learning skills – Knowledge, understanding, and experience in training models in Deep Learning, Generative AI, regression, classification, reinforcement learning, and state of the art AI algorithms.
  • Statistical skills – knowledge and understanding of probability theory and distributions, descriptive statistics, matrix algebra, multivariate statistics, polynomial analysis, parametric and non-parametric methods, and plotting data (scatter plots, box plots, gradient plots, polynomial surface plots), experimental design, and Bayesian inference. Knowledge in 1-2 statistical computing languages (R, Python, SAS). Python strongly preferred.
  • Software engineering skills – Computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithm theory, learning theory), programming language experience (at least 2 of the following programming languages: Python, Scala, Ruby, Java, C#, C++). Python strongly preferred.
  • Database skills – Basic knowledge in SQL programming, NoSQL databases, relational database management systems, data warehouses, cloud technologies.
  • Domain knowledge skills – Curious about data, creative problem-solving skills, systems thinking skills, hacker mindset, collaborative and sharing mindset, understanding of software engineering and machine learning engineering life cycle, ability to quickly acquire aerospace business/functional knowledge.
  • Communication/visualization skills – Ability to engage with senior management, ability to communicate data science work and results effectively to a senior management and non-technical audience, ability to communicate data science work to software engineers, data engineers, and business intelligence analysts, story-telling skills, knowledge of visualizations packages in Python.
  • Education/Experience – Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in a quantitative field such as computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, computational neuroscience, physics, chemistry, and information systems.

Summary pay range: Min: $158,950 – Max: $230,000
