The Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) team is seeking a M&PChemical/Contamination Engineer to join the team in the Puget Sound, WA area. The candidate will be joining a team responsible for developing, defining, and driving chemical/contamination requirements across multiple programs.

Our team is currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including experienced and senior level engineers.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Defines requirements and approves tools, equipment, materials, parts, and processes used in the engineering design, manufacture and/or maintenance of products for ground-based contamination support – general (contamination sampling, analysis, remediation recommendations, specifications, supplier support, facility compliance monitoring, out-gas testing, etc.)

  • Advise stakeholders on the properties and fabrication of metal parts and composite parts as well as assembly and fabrication topics.

  • Defines and leads contamination control for tools, equipment, materials, parts, and processes used in the engineering design, manufacture and/or maintenance of Boeing products.

  • Act as support to structural/mechanical M&P engineering, assisting with drawing review of structural components.

  • Incorporates contamination control best practices for space systems manufacturing.

  • Partners with suppliers, build/fab teams, design IPTs to review contamination approaches and implementation practices.

  • Participates and acts as Lead Contamination Engineer for Drawing review, specification requirements and interpretation, specifically on how M&P fits into design and structural analysis.

  • Assists in evaluation of emerging technologies for potential application to business needs.

  • Performs routine tests and audits to qualify suppliers to applicable requirements.

  • Conducts routine analysis to determine performance or reasons for processes challenges statistical analysis concepts such as normal distribution, standard deviations, mean, probability, and confidence levels.

  • Assists in implementing corrective and preventive actions.

  • Uses project management tools to meet cost, technical, and schedule requirements

  • Incorporates environmental health and safety, LEAN and Quality principles into (1) processes, (2) research, design and qualification, (3) work procedures and (4) labs

  • Display skill and ability to collect, organize, synthesize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources.

  • Use a variety of media, clearly conveys information and ideas to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.

  • Knowledge of attributes and performance capabilities of various analytical laboratory instruments and the ability to use and maintain instruments (e.g. pH meter, turbidimeter, balances, ICP, GC, GC/MS, FTIR, GFAA, Auto Analyzer)

  • Makes customers and their needs a primary focus of one's actions.

  • Discovers new opportunities and solutions for problems by looking beyond current practices and using innovative thinking. Tries different and novel ways to deal with work problems and opportunities.

  • Provide products and services that meet the highest technical and quality standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies and processes and embrace first-time quality as a way of life – not accepting, creating or passing any defects and speaking up.

  • Identifying and correcting conditions and behaviors that affect employee, public, and customer safety; upholding safety standards; demonstrating proactive safety culture leadership.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite between two locations as needed by business or program.  The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the listed location options.

This position requires an active U.S. Top Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)

Special Program Access or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

  • 3+ years of experience with aerospace/space materials and processes engineering (i.e., materials assessment, contamination control, thermal protection systems, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • 5+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Active TS/SCI clearance

  • Experience working in clean rooms and associated environments.

  • Prior Process Engineering work experience in highly clean manufacturing/development environment (chip, semiconductor, etc.)

  • Spacecraft manufacturing experience

  • Experience with requirements flow down

  • Knowledge of material processing for metals, polymers, composites, and electronics

  • Knowledge of corrosion principles (such as crevice, stress, dissimilar metals).

  • Advanced knowledge of design concepts and techniques (e.g., concurrent engineering, Design for Manufacture/Assembly [DFM/A]).

  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings and specifications (e.g., blueprint/schematic reading, specification, change, design).

  • Knowledge of responsibilities and tasks performed by various Engineering departments/disciplines (e.g., design, test, software, technology, avionics).

  • Knowledge of the interaction between departments/disciplines and how their products/processes affect one another and impact non-engineering processes (e.g., Operations, Logistics, Business).

  • Knowledge of inorganic chemical processing (such as chromic acid anodizing, phosphoric acid anodizing, sulfuric acid anodizing, etching, plating).

  • Knowledge of material processing for metals (e.g., welding forging, heat treat, machining, forming), polymers and composites (e.g., autoclave curing, lay-up, co-curing, repair), sealants and finishes processing (e.g., plating, painting, surface preparation, fay surface sealing, fillet sealing), and ceramic (e.g., high temperature processing, machining) and electronic materials (e.g., soldering, printed circuit board cleaning, conformal coating).

  • Ability to apply knowledge of materials engineering and scientific principles to develop, design, analyze, test, and validate solutions for complex systems, sub-systems, and designs.

  • Knowledge of organic chemical processes (such as top coating, priming, surface cleaning).

  • Ability to understand the big picture and the inter-relationships of all positions and activities in the system, including the impact of changes in one area on another area. This includes the ability to see and understand the inter-relationships between components of systems and plans, anticipate future events, and apply the principles of systems thinking to accelerate performance.

Typical Education/Experience:

Experienced (Level 3):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Senior (Level 4):

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range for experienced: $102,000 - $138,000

Summary pay range for senior: $124,950 - $169,050
